The six years in prison imposed upon Katamwa Bright yesterday for unlawful sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl will run concurrently with the 18-year jail sentence also imposed on him yesterday for armed robbery.
Five years ago, on August 22, Bright attacked the daughter of a friend in her home, while she was sitting her one-year-old sibling.
At the time, Bright was 22 and was well known to the victim’s family, so much so, he had gone to the house that day to drop off “bug spray.”
The convict was allowed into the house because of his familiarity with the family and while the teen was dressing the baby on her mother’s bed, Bright forced himself on her, told her not to scream or tell anyone.
He was charged with rape which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison and the matter was taken to court.
A month ago, he decided to plead guilty to a lesser offence of “unlawful sexual intercourse” with a girl of 14 years which has a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail.
His guilty plea came on the second day of his trial for rape, following an adjournment of the defence’s cross-examination of the young victim.
The prosecution, led by Crown Counsel Adlai Smith, accepted the plea and the indictment was amended to include the lesser offence.
