On behalf of the Office of the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, I wish to commend the Government of Antigua & Barbuda, led by Prime Minister Hon. Gaston Browne and all ministries involved, for the manner in which they led the preparation effort both in Antigua and Barbuda prior to the approach of Hurricane Irma. The decisive action which was taken resulted in no loss of life and minimal damage to infrastructure and property.

I wish to thank all the government agencies which were involved in the preparation, inclusive of the Antigua Meteorological Services, the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force, the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) and Solid Waste Management Authority.

We must also thank the non-profit agencies such as the Red Cross, which worked closely with NODS to distribute essentials to the shelters, and which will be distributing relief supplies to Barbuda.

Gratitude should be extended to the corporate citizens, including the management and staff of our hotels across the nation for keeping our visitors comfortable and safe.

Our private citizens must be applauded for attaching the seriousness to this national disaster that it deserved. They took individual responsibility to ensure that their families and immediate environs were protected as best they could.

The intensity with which Hurricane Irma was predicted to strike Antigua and Barbuda was lessened by the grace of God. God speared us from impending destruction and disaster. We must therefore never forget that God is in control of man and nature – he calmed the storm and parted the Red Sea. We have been given another chance. Let us unite, irrespective of personal and political persuasion, in order to build a stronger nation.
