ST JOHN’S, Antigua – A lone gunman remains on the run while his shooting victim, Miguel Brito, is in serious but stable condition at Mount St John’s Medical Centre.
Brito, 32, was shot in the hand and bullet fragments struck him in the face and mouth. A friend of the Dominican Republic native said his injuries require surgery as the alignment of his teeth has been affected by the shooting.
“He is able to communicate on a certain level but there is damage to his face, which is swollen and his hand that had to get surgery,” the friend said.
It was about 11 pm Friday when Brito and friends were hanging out at a Spanish food bar opposite King George V Grounds in Perry Bay when the incident unfolded.
The friend said the dimly lit area was packed with people who were purchasing food and dancing to the music in the streets and among them was the shooter.
“Miguel was there liming for a bit and he saw the guy lurking around the area near his vehicle. He went up to the man and asked whether he needed help and the man pulled out the gun,” the friend said.
The man’s friend said he, Brito, put his hands above his head when he realised the man was armed, but the man proceeded to shoot him.
The unmasked man then fled in Brito’s car, since the key was left in the ignition. The police later found the vehicle abandoned in Donovans.
A vague description of the shooter indicates he is dark in complexion and slimly built.
Police have issued an appeal for people to call the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at 462-3913/4 with information regarding the incident.
