VJ and Donna Charles emerged winners of the second annual Kennedy’s Classic Couples Pool Tournament on Sunday.
They yanked the championship away from tournament favorites Bernard “Neil” Dowdy and Kudelkys “Kiss” Gilbert in a one-sided final.
The champs won 3-0 in the best of five match final held at Kennedy’s Classic, much to the surprise of the many spectators who came for the clash. Dowdy and Gilbert were coming off a similar championship run two week ago.
Prior to the start of the competition, Charles joked that, “they [Dowdy and Gilbert] only won (two weeks ago) because we (the new champions) were not there.”
Well, her words proved to be prophetic as they cruised to victory in stylish fashion, winning very comfortably indeed.
For their effort, the champions took home EC $500, a case of Corona Beer, a couple’s massage at a five-star hotel, and a fruit basket.
Dowdy and Gilbert took second place, leaving the venue with EC $250, a case of Corona Beer and day passes for two at Jolly Beach.
Carlos Lima Salis and Maria Guerrero were third.
They received a case of Corona Beer, a ‘bottle’ of chocolate and a fruit basket.
The organisers also gave prizes for the best shot, a bottle of wine, which went to Ms Murray, and the best dressed couple, a fruit basket.
The exquisitely dressed couple, the Vernons — he in a black and blue waistcoat and black pants, and she in a matching blue dress — took home that prize.
Fitzroy Braithwaite, the fruit man on the corner donated the fruit baskets while the cash prizes, wines and beer were donations of the organizer, Kennedy’s Classic.
General Manager of the facility, Kevin Francis was extremely delighted with the turnout, players and spectators alike.
He also welcomed the intervention of all the other sponsors.
“I am grateful for the number of people who, not just took part in the event but those who came out and watched,” Francis said,
They have shown tremendous support for the sport of pool and we at Kennedy’s will continue to promote and inspire others to play and compete as well,”
He added: I want to specially thank Fitz (fruit man) for donating the fruit baskets.
“When it comes to sports Fitz is always willing to lend support in some way, shape or form and he should be commended greatly for that.”
