Effective September 1, residents will no longer be able to import air conditioning and refrigeration equipment which contain R22 refrigerant.
This is according to the Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Industry and Sports which put the ban in place.
The ministry also says the ban will be placed on the refrigerant itself except for businesses that will be given a quota to import.
R22 refrigerant is one of the most commonly used refrigerants in domestic air conditioners like window AC, split AC, packaged AC and also in number of central air conditioning systems.
The ministry of trade says the ban is being introduced because it is an ozone depleting substance which affects the environment.
