CASTRIES, St. Lucia, Apr 5, CMC – The St. Lucia government has expressed its disappointment with nationals who remain in the United States or migrate to other countries and fail to pay loans given to them even after completing their studies.

Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony also read a letter from the Bank of St. Lucia as legislators debated motion to guarantee an EC$3.3 million (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) loan for 23 students pursuing higher education overseas.

“The financial institution stated that students were unwilling to meet their financial commitments upon completion of their studies,” he said.

Anthony outlined a number of concerns raised by the Bank of St. Lucia, among them, the perceived notion held by some university graduates who believe they are not obligated to repay their loans because the government of Saint Lucia secured the funds.

But opposition legislator Richard Frederick said the motion was yet another example of the government seeking funds without providing much information to the Parliament.
