Golden Grove FC and Bargain Center Bendals FC remained unbeaten in Zone A of the Antigua & Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) Second Division on Monday as they enjoyed contrasting victories in their scheduled fixtures.
Golden Grove, playing in Parham, inflicted a 5-2 trouncing on the home team ABAYA, while Bendals, playing at home, edged Bailey’s Jewellers Young Warriors 1-0.
Shaquill Watkins had a double for Golden Grove while there were single strikes from Tavin Anthony, Rohan Watkins and D Samuel all in a winning effort. Jawani Jarvis and Stanley Turner were the goal scorers for ABAYA.
Golden Grove remain at the top of the standings with 12 points after four matches while ABAYA sink to the sixth position with just one point from their three outings.
Coach of the Golden Grove team and former national goalkeeper Elvis “Reptile” Anthony said getting a good start is important to his team’s success.
“Before the start of the season, I said to my players that if we are going to come out of the zone we have to start preparing early. I have been training three months before carnival, preparing my team because I know that at the start of the season we are going to need that edge, so my team is well conditioned, well prepared for the task,” he said.
Meanwhile, Andre Jacobs scored the lone goal for Bendals as they move to nine points from three matches and second on the standings in Zone A following their close victory over Young Warriors.
Assistant coach Tracy Allen praised the efforts of the players, but called for more support from ex-players in and around the community.
“I want to see more of the past players coming out and playing a role. Even though you can’t come physically, just send a word of encouragement because it helps the players. It is a real challenge … I want to see football move from teams and go into clubs. It is not the way I expected but I have a good friend who asked me to assist them and I am just doing it out of the goodness of my heart,” he said.
In the other match played on Monday, JSC Progressors had their first victory in four matches, beating John Hughes 1-0 in Johnsons. The lone strike came from Marenllos Isadore as Progressors move to five points in four matches and fifth on the standings.
John Hughes remains on without a point from three matches and eighth on the nine-team standings.
