ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Former All Saints East and St Luke MP Eustace Cochrane and a toddler are among five people hospitalised, following a late afternoon four vehicle smash up on All Saints main road yesterday.
One eyewitness told OBSERVER media, Cochrane, who was driving a black Rav4 A23173, appeared to have lost control of the vehicle in front of a pre-school upon entering All Saints Village.
“He wasn’t driving fast. He was going at moderate speed and lost control. As he started to shift over to the right side of the road, he made contact with a white pickup,” the male witness, who did not reveal his name, said.
Having hit that vehicle (C3348) which landed on its roof, Cochrane’s Rav4 reportedly collided with a Hilux pickup C991 and a Nissan Tida car A23254.
One of the villagers said, “I heard such a piercing scream that it forced me out of my bed and shouted the names of my children. Everyone ran out the house to see.”
She said it was some time after 5 pm.
The witness was overheard recounting that the driver of C3348 lifted the toddler, who appeared to be about three years old, from the vehicle. She said they took the child into a nearby house and awaited the arrival of an ambulance.
The woman said Cochrane appeared “very shaken” and couldn’t immediately say what caused him to lose control.
Cochrane’s son, Neil Cochrane rushed to the scene upon hearing the news.
He said his father complained of chest pains, but did not say what happened.
