ST JOHN’S, Antigua – They don’t all have crowns but the nine calypso finalists picked to wrest the title from reigning monarch De Bear at the Wadadli Beer Calypso Monarch show on Sunday August 5 are all veterans in the business. And they don’t include competition regulars Kaseba, nor King Panman.
The finalists were chosen after judges tabulated the scores from both the quarter-finals and semi-finals.
The three women making the cut are Princess Thalia, Queen Gee Bee, and Queen Singing Althea.
Thalia, daughter of another competitor – King Zacari – is a three-time junior monarch, while Gee Bee is a former calypso queen.
Singing Althea, returning from a one-year break from competition, is a three-time calypso queen.
Zacari, a three-time calypso monarch, went in as a favourite in Sunday night’s competition after topping the list at the previous eliminations.
Those competitors are expected to face strong challenge from Young Destroyer – the undefeated Caribbean King of Calypso. In the mix are veterans Calypso Jim and Richie Francis.
Rounding off the finalists are King Fiah, a former monarch and Scorpion, who returned to competition after a break.
Carnival 2012 runs from July 28 to August 7 under the theme “In Living Colour.”
