Caribbean nationals eligible for European-funded scholarships

Caribbean nationals, including staff, postgraduate students and alumni of the University of the West Indies (UWI), can apply for scholarships available in the 2011 Mundus ACP Project led by the University of Porto, Portugal and sponsored by the European Commission.

The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in higher education, which aims to promote partnerships between European and third-country higher education institutions by providing exchange and scholarship opportunities.

The Mundus ACP Project in particular is a partnership of 20 higher education institutions from African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries and Europe. The project’s main goal is to create opportunities for better understanding between the ACP countries and Europe, through the exchange of people, knowledge and skills at the Higher Education level.

UWI is one of only two Caribbean partners in the project, while European partners include institutions in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. This special mobility scheme allows applicants from the identified ACP countries to apply to European partner institutions, and offers full master’s scholarships, doctoral programmes and academic and administrative scholarships to support studies, research and training in Europe. The Project includes the payment of a monthly scholarship (between 1000 and 2500 Euros, according to the type of mobility), a return ticket, health, accident and travel insurance, and tuition fees to the host institution, where applicable.

Participation in the Project is not limited to the staff and students of The UWI (Target Group 1), however. Full Master’s scholarships are available to Caribbean nationals who have obtained a university degree or equivalent from other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Caribbean countries classified as ACP countries (Target Group 2), as well as candidates who can demonstrate that they are in a particularly vulnerable Institution, for social, political or economical reasons (Target Group 3).

The deadlines for application are December 31, for UWI Doctoral students and academic and administrative staff (Target Group 1) and January 31, 2011 for all other categories of Masters students (Target Groups 2 & 3).
