The registration process for Antiguans and Barbudans who have signed up to access healthcare services on board the Chinese floating hospital, Ark Peace, is now closed. This is according to information that was posted on the Ministry of Health’s facebook page Monday afternoon.
The, vessel which arrived in Antigua on Monday, will be providing services to over 2,700 residents during its one-week miss ion dubbed Harmony 2018. The ship’s air ambulance is also expected to travel to the sister island of Barbuda to provide medical services  to residents there.
Health Minister Molwyn Joseph was among the many dignitaries who gathered at the Nevis Street Pier yesterday to welcome the vessel to the island.
Joseph said the vessel’s presence marks China’s continued generosity towards the people of Antigua and Barbuda. The minister is also encouraging those who would have registered, to ensure that they take the necessary precautions to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
“We are gearing up for that at the Mount St. John’s Medical Centre and we expect our citizens to adopt the whole concept of wellness,” Joseph said.
Governor General Sir Rodney Williams said the vessel’s visit to Antigua is the second of two medical service opportunities from which residents were able to benefit. He was making reference to the Chinese Bright Journey team that visited the island about three weeks ago and conducted over 300-plus cataract surgeries at the hospital and the group that arrived yesterday.
“This is an incredible demonstration of the friendship shared between our two countries. Ambassador Wang, please convey our gratitude to the Chinese President for this generous offer of assistance,” Sir Rodney said.
Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene also encouraged locals to ensure that they take full advantage of the services offered on board the vessel.
Ark Peace is a 300-bed floating hospital, belonging to the Chinese Navy. The ship is staffed by more than 100 medical personnel and equipped with eight operating rooms.
Ark Peace medical staff also offer a range of traditional Chinese treatments.
