The Ministry of Works and Housing is urging residents to stay away from the eastern and southern walls outside the Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG) due to the structural failure of the concrete fence.
The walls are on Coronation Road which faces Her Majesty’s Prison and the section opposite to Government House on Independence Drive.
Minister of Sports and Festivals, EP Chet Greene said the walls’ failure will not affect any upcoming events scheduled at the grounds, to include sporting and Carnival-related functions.
He also said the Director of Housing and Works, “Dr [Lucien] Hanley is onto it” and the repairs are expected to “be done in short order”.
In speaking to OBSERVER media, Communications Officer in the Ministry of Works and Housing Shawn Thomas said discussions are under way with the Royal Police Force of Antigua & Barbuda (RPFAB) and his departmental heads.
“The ministry and police would not want the wall to fall and cause injury to the pedestrians and passing traffic.”
“The plan of action is likely repair of the wall but as you can imagine it’s a very old wall so it is not something that can be easily fixed.  The director of Works and Housing in collaboration with his engineers and the police will be working closely together to see the best way to go forward with dealing this wall,” Thomas said.
