ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding an attempted suicide by a Parham woman who ingested bleach and other substances and is now hospitalised.
It is reported that the 25-year-old woman committed the act following an argument with her mother on Sunday.
Police issued a press statement on the matter yesterday but did not indicate how it was discovered the woman had ingested the substances.
Apart from swallowing the bleach and other cleaning agents, she reportedly took unprescribed medication.
The attempted suicide victim is in stable condition and was admitted to Mount St John’s Medical Centre for further observation and counselling.
The police have not released the name of the woman owing to the sensitive nature of the matter.
Police statistics for 2009 show there was one suicide and three attempts.
In 2010, the number of reported attempts jumped to seven while one person succeeded.
Last year there were three cases of attempted suicide and one suicide.
