The Winter Family Junior Tennis Tournament was held over two weekends at the Halycon Cove by Rex Resorts tennis courts. As there are only 4 courts available at Halycon, the tournament was split into the two weekends.
The Under 12 & Under 14 groups played on May 09 and Under 18?s palyed on Saterday, May 16. The award ceremony was held Friday, May 22.
In the Girls 12 and under category D?Jeri Raymond has little trouble beating Noah Peters 6-2.
In the Boys 12 and Under, Triston Blatter hardly broke a sweat when he spanked Leon Swann, 6-0
For the Girls 14 & Under, Zhane Potter outplayed Erica hennery, 6-1. Henry defaulted the second set.
The Boys 14 & Under showed more competitive promise as Edward Buckley managed to overcome Jevannie Ambrose, 8-5.
In the Girls 18 & under division, Ivaline Murrain was no match for Alicia Williams. She was soundly whipped in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
The much anticipated Boys 18 & under match was the nail-biter that it was expected to be. Osei Harris edged Ron Murrain, 6-2, 0-6, 7-6, with a 7-3 score in the tie-breaker.
The Antigua & Barbuda Tennis Association (ABTA) would like to thank all the sponsors for their generous contributions and for their efforts in making tennis in Antigua & Barbuda a reality for many children- Sterlings, Q-Rios Perfumery (who sponsored the Mixed Doubles in February), Dr. Jammula Dentistry, the Winter family, and of course Halycon Cove by Rex Resorts.
They also express their gratitude to the Tournment Director Charmaine Ephraim for scheduling the tournament in a timely and efficient manner and to the parents for their unending support.
Several of the children will be participating in the International Tennis Federation (ITF), tournament this summer. The first of the regional tournaments will be held in St. Maarten from July 6-11. The participating children will depart on July 3.
To that end, the Halycon Tennis Association is having a cake sale tomorrow, Saturday May 30, starting at 9am in front of the Epicurean at Woods Mall to raise funds for the trip. The players going to St. Maarten will be having a training session with Coach Cordell Williams this Saturday at the Halycon courts.
The other islands hosting ITF tournaments are Jamica, July 13-18, St. Lucia, August 308, and St. Vincent at a date to be decided.
In a continued effort to raise funds for the ITF Summer Tour, the Halycon Tennis Club will be hosting a barbeque at the West Indies Oil Company playing field today and every Friday commencing at 6pm.
