St. John’s Antigua- Winston Derrick, Chairman of OBSERVER Publication, has passed away, his family has confirmed.
Derrick served as Chairman and Managing Director of The Daily OBSERVER newspaper andantiguaobserver.com website, Observer Printery, OBSERVER Radio 91.1 FM and Hitz 91.9 FM up until his sudden death.
He was host of the most popular radio show ‘Voice of the People.’
His family said funeral arrangements will be announced later.

I’m writing to say that I already miss Winston. It is not easy to say goodbye to someone whom you’ve known since childhood…BUT…it’s more than that with Winston. The cultural, political and intellectual space he occupied was crucial to life in Antigua and Barbuda, and the whole country will feel the gap he has left.
As Winston ‘journeys’ to join the Ancestors, I send him love, much respect, and accolades for having done a most impressive ‘innings’.
My condolences to the whole family.
Althea Prince.

Winston, intellects of your calibre go way to soon. You and your brother quite obviously had the courage to follow your hearts and intuition. Condolences to Kim and the entire family especially Georgia.

I join with my fellow Antiguans in mourning the death of Winston Derrick. I think Antigua has lost one of its greatest treasures. Whenever I return home, I have been struck by Winston’s dedication to his country and his people. I applaud his courage in standing up for our democracy and Antiguan’s right to free speech. Our country can only be stronger because of these values. A “Voice of the People” has been dimmed. Let it continue to echo throughout our land. In sincere sympathy, Dianne Carrott-Hope

On behalf of the entire faculty, staff and students of AICASA – condolences to the Derricks. Winston was a great friend, a true son of the soil and an indefatigable champion for those who could not easily speak up. Winston’s approach to life always reminded me of Gandhi’s statement that “I want freedom for the full expression of my personality.” His quest for that expression made Antigua a better place. Rest in peace, my brother!

I am in the States and listen every day to 911 and read the paper. So I was shocked and very deeply heart broken to hear of Winston’s death. My time working at the Daily Observer was made so much brighter by the humor, support and keen intellegence of my boss – God bless his soul, family and members of the Observer family of which I will always consider my self a member.

….Please tell me this isn’t true. I saw him just at the airport when I was going to study abroad and he gave me a hug goodluck and goodbye. This is too tragic for one so talented and intelligent. Truly gone too soon.

It’s sad indeed to wake up to such news. Such a great voice Winston held. May his family, friends and his colleague at Observer Media Group find comfort in the Lord. His work and voice will forever remain in our hearts, memories are forever. So shocking

Winston Derrick was my employer for all of one day. After the first time we met, he became Uncle Winston. I cannot describe how deeply his death affects me. I wish his wife Kim and his children, especially his daughter Georgia who I got to know, much strength. Winston had a big voice and he used it to speak up for others. That makes his loss all the more deep. I hope there will be more Winston Derricks in Antigua & Barbuda who will take a stand for what is right no matter what. Rest in Peace Uncle Winston.
