St. John’s Antigua- Goals from Okeem “Soda” Challenger and Kelly Fredericks helped team Antigua & Barbuda record a second straight victory in the ongoing Caribbean Cup Inc Soccer Tournament in Brooklyn, New York.
The Antiguans followed up their opening 2-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago with a 3-1 win over St Kitts/Nevis on Sunday as they established a two-game winning streak.
Antigua & Barbuda got their opening strike when national forward Gason “Bubbler” Gregory had his low cross come off the boot of a back-tracking defender and fly into the right side of the net in the 25th minute.
Approximately 10 minutes later, a corner on the left-side of the field presented Antigua with another opportunity to score. The kick, which was taken by Challenger, fell to midfielder Delbert Williams who struck the ball towards goal.
Fredericks smartly nudged the ball with his head on its way towards goal, leaving the goalkeeper stranded as the ball flew over the goal line.
With 85 minutes already played in the contest, Antigua & Barbuda seemed content with simply possessing the ball and allowing the clock to expire, but an opening developed on the left side of the attacking 18-yard box and Challenger stepped into it, received a pass from Gregory and hit a bending right-footed attempt into the far end of the net.
St Kitts/Nevis had their lone conversion coming in the opening stages of the physical contest when they netted from a goalmouth scramble.
In other matches, St Lucia and Panama played to a one-all draw, while Haiti defeated Grenada 1-0. Antigua & Barbuda will next play Guyana on June 17.
