Cycling association seeks CCC volunteers

Antigua & Barbuda Cycling Association (ABCA) is on the hunt for volunteers as they continue to prepare for October’s hosting of the Caribbean Cycling Championships.
This is according to one member of the planning committee, Cleofoster Harris, who said volunteers are needed in all areas, including the transporting of equipment and officials.
“If you have a pick-up truck that can help to transport the bikes, vehicles to use in the official races to help with the different overseas officials to transport them around, or if you are a driver with a valid driver’s license because we will be getting one or two rental cars from two of our sponsors to utilize throughout the weekend,” Harris said.
“If you volunteer your vehicle we give you a stipend for gas within the region of $100 to $150 and the volunteer forms can be picked up at the NOC. There is a deadline and we are looking at October 5 as a cutoff point for the volunteers so we could see who we have and who we don’t have,” he added.
Volunteers, according to Harris, are also needed in a number of other areas as they seek to fill positions of over 80 helpers for the two-day event.
“To help set up the venue, to be on the road as marshals, to help brand the entire race course because for such a prestige event like this we need to make sure that we go all out in terms of branding and giving our sponsors all the necessary mileage,” he said.
“We also need people to work at the airport in terms of handling the arrivals. We have a help desk at the airport and we have a help desk at the hotel, so we are looking for persons to come on and give their services. We are looking at approximately 100 volunteers.”
The cycling association, in July, named a 12-member men’s team and a two-member female training team as they prepare to represent the nation in the Championships to be held here on October 20 to 21.
As the host country, Antigua & Barbuda is allowed to fill two teams of five riders in the male division and a three-member female team as well.
The association has named the first team of five riders, and a second team of seven.
The first team consists of Jyme Bridges, Robert Marsh, Marvin Spencer, Andre Simon and Omari King, while the second team includes two reserve riders.
The seven are Clint Henry, Walton Francis, Ashley Rhoades, Ken Jackson and Dale Richardson, while the reserves are Brian Lyn and Neil Lloyd.
The female team comprises two riders – the 2011 Caribbean Female Time Trial Champion, Tamiko Butler, and Kevinia Francis.
