July 30, 2012, St John’s Antigua – History is in the making for the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court as a female jurist is tipped to take over from Sir Hugh Rawlins, chief justice of the appellate court.
OBSERVER Media has been informed the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Authority is set to install Justice Janice George-Perreira in the post.
During the 55th Meeting of OECS leaders in St. Vincent and the Grenadines last month, the authority said it had selected the new chief but no name was disclosed.
Up to Monday morning, officials at the Supreme Court Headquarters in St Lucia said it could not confirm reports that Justice Perriera will be taking over.
Sir Hugh announced his resignation in February and he demits office on Tuesday. He has however been on vacation since the start of July and Justice Perriera has been acting chief justice since then.
Justice Perriera served as a High Court judge in the region from 2003 to 2008 and was elevated to Justice of Appeal in January 2009.
