As of yesterday, patients requiring Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) services can access such at Mount St John’s Medical Centre (MSJMC).
A release from the hospital said the Open MRI is the first of its kind in Antigua and the region.
Marketing & Communications Manager at MSJMC Salma Crump expressed delight with this addition to the services being offered at the hospital.
“I am very pleased with our ability to provide low-cost MRI or CT consultations as we continue to improve the level of health care within the community. This service will play a vital role in our business strategy, with the general public looking for an alternative to what’s available now.
“This also marks an exciting turning point for the community, where, previously, residents had to go private which sometimes included travelling overseas to receive their MRI exams,” Crump said.
An Open MRI is considered more comfortable for patients, particularly children, the elderly, the obese, and the claustrophobic, and as a result may reduce the need for patient sedation and the number of incomplete exams, the release noted.
MRI is a tool used to diagnose a variety of patient conditions, from heart disease to cancer, neurological illnesses to bone abnormalities. It allows physicians to achieve a better image quality, which provides them with the ability to more quickly determine a patient’s diagnosis so that they can begin treatment.
