ST JOHN’S, Antigua – A 38-year-old mother of five was gunned down in broad daylight yesterday – the latest in an alarming spate of shootings and robberies across the country.

Susan “Sue” Powell of Jennings, the first person killed in Antigua this year, was reportedly shot behind an ear around 1:15 pm, while at work as a sales woman at First Gadget Electronic Store on Thames Street.

The store is located in the heart of St John’s, opposite two banks and within cruise tourism zone Heritage Quay.

A female vendor in the area said she heard someone screaming shortly before a loud explosion erupted.

“I was going to the bathroom and as I reached the passageway where the store is, I heard a scream. The screaming stopped and then I heard another one and then a loud bang. Everything went quiet and people started running,” the vendor said.

She said several business operators quickly shut their doors as scores of vendors, curious onlookers, police and traffic wardens converged on the scene.

“I went into the store and saw her on the ground and when I checked Sue was not breathing, there was blood on the floor. I was so frightened. I looked around but don’t recall seeing anything out of place in the store,” the woman added.

According to well-placed sources, the murder victim’s sister and husband collapsed and had to be rushed to hospital upon hearing the tragic news.

Police issued a press statement last evening, urging residents to report any information about this and other crimes to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at 462-3913/4 or Crime Stopper at 800-TIPS.
