ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Regional carrier LIAT said “based on current available information,” it estimates EC $35 million in insured losses from the recent fire at its hangar at VC Bird International Airport.
A highly placed source, who had earlier spoken of an EC $100 million price tag, told OBSERVER Media this figure had factored in the cost to LIAT to replace what was destroyed.
The major blaze Sunday destroyed a Dash 8 passenger aircraft, buildings, copies of aircraft and other company records, tools, equipment and many other items critical to the airline’s operations.
In a short press release yesterday, LIAT assured that it continues to maintain “normal operations throughout its network.”
It went on to thank the scores of customers, well-wishers and members of the public that have called or sent messages of support to the airline following the disastrous fire.

Might I suggest a Fire Suppresion System at the fuel tank?
What you say? I’ve stated the obvious…Don’t ya just hate when that happens. Thank goodness nobody was hurt “This Time”……
Oh gosh and we could have computerized the old repair records? and kept them save offsite… Some little kid told me he does that with his iPhone. But they got the whole incident on CCTV?
I got a great idea lets see if we can screw up again by not spending any money on safety because it’s not in the budget.
