A former student of New Winthorpes Primary School is the latest recipient of the Caribbean Alumni for Regional Progress (CARP) Scholarship.
On Thursday, two alumni of Caribbean Student Organization (CSO) of Midwestern State University, Timica Richards and Anika Kentish presented a cheque in the amount of $530 to Leslie James.
“We felt it was not enough for us to attend school and move on. We wanted to do something more so as alumni, we all donate toward the fund in order to help a deserving student in our home countries,” Kentish said.
Richards, who hails from the Barnes Hill community, said she was proud to present the scholarship to someone from her community and encouraged others at the school to work hard.
James, who was selected following a recommendation from New Winthorpes principal and staff, is now a now a first form student at Antigua Girls’ High School.
The scholarship recipient is the daughter of Patrice Charles and Jason James, and the first of five children. Her mother said she was pleased with her daughter’s achievements.
“I’m really proud of her because she set her mind to do a lot of work and it paid off,” she said.
