Hankook, Newfield with close ABBA wins

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Hankook Flyers and Newfield Tapers had close wins on Thursday night in Antigua & Barbuda Basketball Association Division 1 matches at JSC Sports Complex, downing their tough opponents, DC Diamond Stars and Akhimo, respectively.

Darnel Azelle led the way for Flyers with 16 points and 16 rebounds, while teammate Cornel Granum came close to a triple-double, registering 15 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and five steals. Michael Jeffers added 11 points.

Diamond Stars’ Toriano Matthew shot a game-high 32 points and grabbed 12 rebounds; Kareem Edwards had 14 points, and nine rebounds, while Adisa Harris produced 14 points, eight rebounds and five steals in their losing effort.

In the second game of the night, Tapers beat Akhimo, 80-77, in an exciting finish.

With the game tied at 77 and 0.3 seconds left on the clock, Tapers’ Andy Williams hit a three-pointer from way downtown just as the buzzer went off to record his second game-winning buzzer-beater of the season.

Williams shot 16 points overall and pulled 15 rebounds; Lashon Ceaser scored 23 points and grabbed 10 boards, while Jules Williams shot 11 points.

Akhimo‘s Nigel Joseph had a huge night, registering 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists and eight steals. Terry Robertson shot 22 points, and Keori Lee produced 16 points and 20 rebounds.

The competition in Division’s 1 and 2 continues nightly at JSC and Ottos Sports complex.
