GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Two students of the Islamic Academy were killed after a car slammed into them on Sunday, police said.

They said 12-year-old Amisha Alli, whose head was severed, and her seven-year-old cousin Rickey Kumar died instantly after being hit by the car that eye-witnesses said had been speeding on the Tuschen Highway, East Bank Essequibo.

Relatives said the children were on their way to a religious function at the Tuschen Masjid when the accident occurred.

The state-owned Guyana Chronicle newspaper said the unidentified driver attempted to flee the scene but was pursued and caught by public spirited citizens and taken to the Leonora Police Station where he is assisting with investigations.

Meanwhile, two elderly persons were killed in a road accident at Friendship on the East Bank Demerara on Sunday night.

Albert Pearson, 59 and his wife, Marlyn, 62, were heading home after attending a christening when the incident occurred.
