ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Teams who have not yet registered to take part in the 2012 instalment of the Guinness Street Ball Competition will have until competition night in the various zones to put their squads together.
This is according to brand manager for guinness at Kennedy’s Club Ltd, Angeliese Weeks, who said there are still some vacant spots in a number of zones that teams can still register.
She said, however, that acceptance is based on the availability of slots at the time of registering.
“Those that have registered on time have definitely secured their spots. People can still register up until the day of their respective zone dates, but when they bring their forms, they can not be confirmed a spot because if the group is full, then they will not be able to play,” she said.
The competition, which commenced last night in Parham where teams faced-off for top honours in the East Zone, will continue into next weekend with matches starting at eight o’clock nightly. Teams are however expected to assemble at 7 pm.
“The registration has been going fine. I think the only zone that we haven’t had the biggest response in is South-East Zone. But the Town Zone, North Zone and the West Zone are almost full. There are still a few spots left in the Central Zone,” Weeks said.
“Tomorrow (Friday) will be the Central Zone which is in All Saints, Saturday is the South-East Zone which is in Liberta, Sunday is the South Zone which is in Bolans, next week Friday will be the West Zone which will be at King George, the Saturday will be the North Zone in Fort Road and the Sunday will be the Town Zone which will be at Ottos,” she added.
In addition to the EC$10,000 prize up for grabs to the local winners, the champions will also earn the right to represent Antigua at a regional challenge to be held in Guyana from June 20-24.
The Antigua champs will have a chance to play for top prizes to include the erection of a street football court in their community and cash prizes totalling US $8,500.
Although it’s a five-aside tournament, each team comprises eight players and can also have a manager/coach.
Teams are only required to show receipt of purchase of a case of guinness to enter and can find forms at the nearest Kennedy’s outlets.
Each player must be at least 18 years old to participate in the competition.
