St. John’s Antigua- National and LIME Old Road player, Gason “Bubbler” Gregory, helped team Antigua & Barbuda to an opening victory in the Caribbean Cup Inc competition which started on Sunday in Brooklyn, New York.
Gregory, who left the senior national team, the “Benna Boys,” following their trip to St Kitts in March, scored the second of two goals as Antigua & Barbuda defeated Trinidad and Tobago, 2-0.
The nippy player latch onto a lobbed ball from teammate Shirville “Corey” Jarvis in minute 30 of the contest before putting his attempt over the head of the advancing Trinidad custodian and into the back of the empty net.
Jarvis had, in the 25th minute, given Antigua & Barbuda the advantage when he picked up a loose ball on the left side of the field, advanced 20 yards and unleashed a powerful left-footed shot to beat Trinidad’s goalkeeper.
Both teams continued to share possession of the ball admirably, building plays and entertaining what was described as a modest Mother’s Day crowd, but the Antiguan defense, which featured some of Antigua’s top defensive players to include Dave “Little Man” Carr and Kevin “Snary” Christian, proved too much for the Trinidadians.
Also on Sunday, Guyana defeated St Kitts & Nevis, 2-0, while 2011 co-champions Grenada played to a goalless draw with newcomers Panama.
Antigua & Barbuda will take the field on May 27 for their next fixture against St Kitts & Nevis.
