ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The Antigua & Barbuda Tennis Association’s (ABTA) first junior doubles tournament took place on the courts of Halcyon by Rex Resort. Though the competition was deemed successful, it saw a low turnout with only two clubs represented – Halcyon Tennis Club and Old Road Fund Tennis Programme
The girls’ doubles champions, Ashley Bersma & Shereese Henry of Halcyon Tennis Club (HTC), reaped their success with the defeat of Chante Francis & Hannah Sternhagen (HTC) in three sets, 4-1, 4-5(6-8), 4-2.
The boys’ doubles champions, Cordell Williams Jr & Justice Christopher (HTC) made an easy win over Old Road Fund’s Frankie Smith & Jamali Irish, 4-1, 4-1.
ABTA thanks tournament sponsors Cool & Smooth and Halcyon Tennis Club for providing the awards for our athletes, tournament director Nadine Fuller and ABS Television for providing some tournament coverage.
As the February tournament schedule continues, ABTA encourages its athletes, both in the private clubs and the schools tennis initiative, to come out and be apart of the Old Road Funds’ Tennis 10s Tournament, scheduled for February 16.
The competition was sponsored by PineHill and Colombian Emeralds.
ABTA also encourages the young athletes to prepare for the Girls 16 & Under Open which commences on February 23.
ABTA invites corporate Antigua to be a part of the association’s competitive season and the development of the nation’s junior athletes.
