LONDON, CMC – The family of a British lawyer who was killed after plunging from the top of a cliff top in St. Lucia on Christmas Day have described her death as “a terrible accident”.
Sarah Thomas, 46, who lived in St Lucia with her husband, Kevin, 36, is believed to have been picking herbs in the garden of her villa in the village of Piaye, when she fell to her death, the Daily Mail reported.
It said her parents William and Christine Pickering and sister, Alison, were “devastated” by the tragedy.
Thomas, from Preston, Lancashire, had immigrated to St. Lucia in 2010 before marrying her St. Lucian-born husband five months ago.
She had left her successful job as the managing director of tax advising company in the United Kingdom to start a fresh life. The couple had met in New York, where he was working, and she was on a business trip.
“Words can’t express what we feel at the loss of our lovely daughter,” Mrs Pickering told the Mail.
“Sarah had been incredibly happy with Kevin. St Lucia was her home. She loved Kevin and loved the island,” she added.
“We wish to make it clear that there has been a full police investigation, and we believe that Sarah’s death is just the result of a terrible accident,” she said, adding that Mrs. Thomas will be buried in St Lucia.
A neighbour is quoted by the Independent newspaper here as saying that the coupled had returned home and Sarah went to the garden to collect a herb when she fell down the cliff.
“From the herb plant to the edge of the cliff is about ten yards. I was at home and heard about the incident. I went to see what had happened,” the neighbour added.
“It is an unnatural death. She and her husband had been to a celebration. We would treat it as suspicious if we suspected foul play, but we don’t at the moment,” Commissioner of the Royal St Lucia Police, Phillip Vernon Francois, told the Independent.
“We have not arrested anyone, and there are no suspects, but that might change.”
However, after a post-mortem confirmed Mrs. Thomas died from head wounds, a police spokesman said: “That is the end of the matter for us. It was an accident.”
