Egan: Bassa will play to the end

Defending champions Bassa are prepared to fight to the bitter end in defence of their Premier Division title.

This is according to coach Noel Egan who said yesterday that his squad, though drawing four of their last five matches in the Digicel and OBSERVER Media Group sponsored competition, will keep playing and fighting for every point until it is mathematically impossible for them to retain the country’s top football prize.

“We have to be realistic. We have drawn four of the last five matches. We are obviously aware that Parham have the big-up on everybody, but while there are still games left and while there is points still there to be played for, then we have to keep going until it’s mathematically not possible,” Egan said.

“I think that all said and done, we are disappointed to be languishing where we are at the moment, but we are one of only two teams that have only lost two games all season and we are endeavouring to blend new players and we will see how it goes.”

The former 5P’s coach went on to state that Bassa started their 2010/11 campaign without the services of key senior players which, coupled with the fact that the team is now in a rebuilding stage, could speak to their run of bad luck in the competition to date.

“Don’t forget that last year we were the champion side (and) we started this season without Lennox ‘Fox’ Julian, Kevin ‘Saxman’ Watts, Shcyan Jeffers, Ranjae Christian, Tahari Lewis, Jamie Thomas, Akeem ‘Leppy’ Thomas, and some players chose to chase bigger wage packages or a wage package in many cases, and some players had to go hang up their boots and we have also been dogged by injuries,” Egan said.

Bassa will take on FBO 2000 Villa Lions in the first match of a double-header on Saturday starting at 4 pm, while Cool & Smooth Empire will come up against Sugar Ridge Sap at 6 pm.

The competition continues on Sunday when A&R Smitty take on Hospitality Services Sea View Farm at 3 pm; Champion Footwear Greenbay Hoppers tackle LIME Old Road at 5 pm, and All Saints United face leaders Asot’s Arcade Parham at 7 pm.
