ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Antigua Barracuda FC continue to struggle in the Pro Division of the United Soccer Leagues (USL), suffering back-to-back losses over the Carnival weekend.

In their latest match, the Antiguans were defeated 4-0 by the Charlotte Eagles on Saturday night after they were defeated 2-0 by the Richmond Kickers one day earlier.

In their latest match, ‘Cudas were floored by goals from Juan Guzman, Darryl Roberts, Josh Rife, and Jorge Herrera.

The win gave the Eagles 29 points on the season with four games remaining on the schedule.

Charlotte controlled possession all night and got off to a fast start with Nate Thornton and Mauricio Salles pressuring the defense in the opening minutes.

Antigua’s goalkeeper Molvin James kept them in the game early with a great diving save to keep a Mauricio Salles shot out of the net.

James couldn’t hold on forever, though, as Guzman volleyed from 30 yards out to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, Roberts doubled the advantage when Herrera found him on a cross. Roberts left nothing to chance and buried it for the 2-0 lead.

Moments later and the Eagles were on their way as Rife got in on the scoring to put the Eagles firmly in front at 3-0.

Charlotte continued to press but the Antigua defense held on and Charlotte headed into halftime with a comfortable 3-0 lead.

Antigua came out of halftime looking for a goal and had a great opportunity in the 57th minute when Orlando Mitchum forced Charlotte goalkeeper Eric Reed to make a diving save.

The Eagles responded three minutes later when Mauricio Salles settled the ball in the center of the box but his shot was hurried and went just wide to the left.

Eight minutes later, it was Salles with the assist as he found Rife for Charlotte’s last goal of the night to put the Eagles up 4-0.

Charlotte had a few more opportunities on goal but the Antigua defense and James kept the Eagles in check to finish the game.

Meanwhile, in their contest against the Richmond Kickers, Barracuda were done in courtesy of a goal and assist from second-half substitute Gerson dos Santos.

The first half was a high-energy display from both sides, and Antigua nearly opened the scoring in the sixth minute following a breakaway by Tamarley “Ziggy” Thomas, but the Barracuda midfielder skied his shot over the bar and out for a goal kick.

The Kickers rallied back in the 11th minute when Sascha Goerres played a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but James claimed the ball in front of Matthew Delicâte to maintain the 0-0 scoreline.

Richmond Head Coach Leigh Cowlishaw introduced dos Santos to the game in the 82nd minute as the Kickers struggled to breakdown the defensive stronghold put forth by the Barracudas.

The Brazilian scored the go-ahead goal with his first touch.

Hiroyama claimed possession in the Antigua half and played a diagonal ball into the penalty area where Burke laid the ball into the path of the onrushing dos Santos.

The midfielder rifled his shot into the upper corner of the net to give the Kickers their first goal of the match in the 84th minute.

Dos Santos turned provider deep into stoppage time when he rolled a pass to Delicâte in the six-yard box. The Kickers’ all-time leading goal-scorer flicked the ball up to himself and launched a side volley into the net to ensure a 2-0 victory.
