St. John’s Antigua- The country’s lone professional football club, Antigua Barracuda FC, will seek to break a two-game losing streak in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) Pro Division when they take on Charleston Battery at the Blackbaud Stadium in the USA on Friday night.
The contest, which is slated to commence at 7:30 pm ET, will be broadcast live on USLNation.com, and more importantly, it will provide the Antiguans with an opportunity to rebound from their second straight defeat, a 3-0 loss to the Wilmington Hammerheads at the Legion Stadium on Wednesday night.
The defeat was the club’s third in five matches as they were done in by early strikes from Andriy Budnyy, who eventually had a double, and Bryce Taylor to send the home team into the interval with a 2-0 advantage.
Wilmington took charge in the opening minutes when Budnyy looped a shot into the left corner of the net in the ninth minute.
The ‘Cudas were in for more heartache just four minutes later when Taylor found himself in the right place at the right time to slam a half-cleared corner past the diving Molvin James in goal for the visitors.
The Antigua & Barbuda Benna Boys custodian managed to get his hand onto the ball, but could not stop it from rushing into the back of the net.
The ‘Cudas had their share of opportunities in the first half as well but were denied on more than one occasion by the Wilmington goalkeeper Alex Howard. The former New York Red Bull made four of his five saves in the first half, which included a save to deny Antigua’s Stephan Smith from the right side of the penalty area.
Budnyy put the icing on the cake in the 76th minute when he took advantage of a through-ball by midfielder Daniel Roberts to shoot low into the left corner of the net.
Before Barracuda FC return home, they will also be competing in the CONCACAF Champions League in Trinidad, from May 6 to 10.
