Crime is everyone’s business too

Dear Editor

Crime appears to be on the increase again in Antigua, particularly armed crime.  A recent spate of violent burglaries in the English Harbour and Falmouth has targeted the white community where, it is perceived, rich pickings are easy.

Not only is this wrong, as the white community is no more wealthy than many other communities in Antigua but, also, it is a mistake. The white community is much more vocal internationally and the word about increasing crime spreads much more rapidly when they are the targets. The net effect is damage to our tourism industry.

That selfish minority of criminals are damaging the wealth of the majority of us. In effect, whenever they steal from one person, they are stealing from all of us because every time a tourist decides not to come to Antigua because of crime it costs every one of us money.

If we want our community to prosper, then it is the duty of every one of us to turn in the criminals to the police, no matter how small the crime and stop the theft of our wealth by this small and dangerous minority.
