ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The Development Control Authority (DCA) has started to crack the whip on vendors who they say are erecting structures on sidewalks and blocking pedestrian traffic.
Chairman of the DCA Board, Leon “Chaku” Symister, confirmed that the authority has already started issuing ‘stop and enforcement’ notices to a number of persons violating the law.
Symister said once a stop order has been issued, individuals have the right to appeal the DCA decision within 28 days.
He further explained that once the 28-day period has expired, the authority has the right to act and in certain cases, the authority could work with the owners to rectify the problem.
“Before we remove anything, even though we have the right to do so, we would give the offending person one last chance to remove the structure and if they refuse or fail to do that, then we do it at their expense,” Symister explained.
The chairman said in recent times, there has been a proliferation of structures across the island near the sidewalks, which impedes the flow of pedestrian traffic.

Does this crackdown include those vendors who, pitch a tent onto a parking spot on the city streets. I could not find a parking spot Friday all because vendors have pitched a tent in the road. I also observed others who park their vehicle and then pitch a tent. All this needs to be stopped.
The vendors outside the meat market need to be removed. Oh gosh, many people don’t even know that that road has two lanes, since the vendors
practically occupy one of the lanes.
Get them off the streets and find a spot for them.

I totally Agree. If you want to vendor. you need to go get a permit or whatever it takes. It’s unfair for some people to do it and other just do what they want. All have to pay the fee.
