NEW YORK, New York – CONCACAF announced on Thursday that the draw for its 2012 Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament would take place on Monday, October 24, commencing at 2 pm ET, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
The competition, which will be played entirely at Vancouver’s newly renovated BC Place Stadium, will take place January 19 to 29.
The top two teams qualify for the 2012 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.
The draw will split eight finalists into two, four-team groups.
The top two teams from each group advance to the semifinals, with the eventual finalists each earning tickets to London.
A match schedule will be released at a later date.
Host and reigning CONCACAF women’s champion Canada is joined by qualifiers from Central America ie Costa Rica and Guatemala, and the Caribbean – Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Haiti – as well as North American entrants Mexico and 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup finalist United States.
The United States has won both previous CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournaments, defeating Mexico 3-2 in the final of the 2004 competition and Canada (6-5 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw) in the 2008 championship match.
