Braves, Ovals win respective playoff series

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Baldwin Braves and F&G Ovals have captured the Division One and Two playoff series respectively of the Cool & Smooth, Stag Beer Antigua & Barbuda Basketball Association best of five series.

Playing back-to-back games on the weekend, Braves and Ovals had consecutive victories over their opponents Big Banana Express and Freetown Travellers respectively.

On Saturday, Braves beat Express, 83-72, with Vivian Destin contributing 37 points, 11 rebounds and six steals, while Micah Gore added 13 points and five rebounds for Braves.

Centre Xavier Meade had a 28-point/five-rebound night, and Lindsay McDonald 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Express.

On Sunday, Braves won 82-61.

MVP of the series Braves’ Destin produced 20 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists. Jerome Andrew shot 14 points.

Meade shot 18 points and corralled seven rebounds, and Kareem Blair contributed 13 points and nine rebounds. Braves won the series three games to one.

In the Division 2 matches on Saturday, F&G Ovals escaped Freetown Travellers, 76-74. Mario Davis shot 15 points and grabbed five boards, and Brian “Hollywood” Matthew shot 28 points for Ovals.

      Neville Martin contributed 14 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and a couple of steals, while Leroy Percival had 30 points and 10 rebounds for the losers.

On Sunday, Ovals won convincingly, 86-59. Matthew led with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Davis had 16 points and eight rebounds for Ovals.

Freetown Travellers’ points came mainly from Leroy Percival who had 22 points and 16 rebounds, while Teon Joseph produced 12 points, four rebounds and five steals.

F&G Ovals won the series three games to one. Brain Matthew was voted the MVP.
