20th August 2012, St. John’s Antigua- An 17-year-old DeSouza Road resident who fell off a recreational boat yesterday afternoon remained missing at sea up to late last night, leaving relatives fearing the worst.

The Coast Guard called off search operations around 8pm last night until first light today.

Lieutenant Commander Auden Nicholas told OBSERVER Media, “There was very little we could have done with the darkness in the area. We did all we could from the time of the report and will resume the search at first light (today).”

The teenager, whose name he did not disclose, was on a boat with friends at Deep Bay, on the west coast of Antigua, when he fell overboard around 5:30 pm.

Keen not to reveal much the commanding officer of the Coast Guard said, “The Coast Guard was informed of an incident and we went out in search of that person. We did not find that person and neither did the people from the boat he was in.”

Messages of the possible tragedy made the rounds on Blackberry Messenger last evening with several persons revealing the name and alias of the individual.

However, the commander said the matter is sensitive and advised against spreading of any such information until there is surety of the outcome.

Meteorological Office chiefs said sea conditions were favourable for bathers and recreation.
