The 2009/10 Premier Division champions of Antigua & Barbuda, Bassa FC, will take on the Alpha United FC out of Guyana in their opening leg of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Champions Cup slated to commence in early March.
This was revealed by the competition’s draw which took place late last week and pits the local giants against the Guyanese powerhouse in an opening match slated to take place March 9 to 11 in Guyana.
Following the opening leg of the home and away contest, Bassa will host Alpha United between March 18 and 20.
The host club will have to specify which of the three dates would be more ideal. The host clubs would also have to confirm venue and kick-off times ahead of the contest.
Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force will come up against Western Stars of Bermuda in their opening leg also slated for March 9 to 11, while Newtown United of St Kitts and Nevis will host Caledonia AIA of Trinidad and Tobago.
The other Caribbean match-up will pit Northern United All Stars of St Lucia against SV Walking Boyz Co of Suriname.
One other local club, LIME Old Road FC, who finished runners-up to Bassa in 2009/10, opted not to take part in the contest, sighting a lack of funds and a lack of willingness by Antigua & Barbuda Football Association to assist the club financially.
President of Old Road FC, Keithroy Black, however hinted that the team has been invited to take part in what should be a more lucrative venture and is, instead, looking forward for that.
