ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Antigua Barracuda FC suffered their eighth loss in 10 matches playing in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) this season when they were beaten 2-0 by the Orlando City Lions at the Florida Citrus Bowl on Sunday.
The loss was also Cudas’ second in three days following a 3-0 defeat at the feet of Charleston Battery on Friday night and seeds the Antiguan professional outfit in the number 10 position in the 11-team standings with just six points from their 10 matches so far.
The Antiguans have scored seven times, but have given up 21 goals for a goal difference of negative 14.
Playing in front of 6,148 spectators on Sunday however, Barracuda gave up goals to Kieron Bernard and Matt Luzunaris as Lions recorded their ninth victory of the season which saw them move unto 29 points and maintain their hold at the top of the standings.
Bernard headed home off a Luke Boden corner-kick in the 14th minute to give Lions a 1-0 advantage that would hold until the interval.
The Antiguan offense did very little to trouble the Lions defense throughout the contest and the home team found a second goal in added time when Luzunaris, brought on as a second half substitute, managed to sneak behind the Cudas’ defense where he latched onto a through pass from Ian Fuller before slipping the ball past the advancing Molvin James in goal.
With the victory, Orlando hold a five-point advantage over the rest of the USL table. Charleston Battery occupy the number two position with 24 points, while the Rochester Rhinos are third with 22 points.
The Dayton Dutch Lions occupy the cellar position with just five points from their 12 matches to date.
