Antigua Masters retain LI title

St. John’s Antigua- Antigua Masters claimed their seventh Leeward Islands Masters cricket title when they played unbeaten to retain their crown in this year’s tournament in Anguilla over the Whit weekend.

Antigua Masters notched up wins against St Kitts, St Thomas, and Anguilla before securing their title with another victory over St Croix in the final.

They beat St Kitts by 46 runs in their opening encounter. Scores: Antigua Masters 136 for four off 20 overs. Glenroy Weekes 74, Purnell “Roxy” Joseph 22, Ian “Lumbus” Gore 26.

St Kitts 90 all out. Charles Morton 35; Vince “Worldman” Smith three for 10, Pat “Ipah” Spencer three for 14, Robert “Trophy” Browne two for 22.

Antigua Masters crushed St Thomas by seven wickets. Scores: St Thomas 91 for eight. Bryant Stuart 23, G Harris 21; Pat Spencer four for 17. Antigua Masters 92 for three. Ian Gore 43.

Antigua Masters prevailed by 12 runs against Anguilla. Scores: Antigua Masters 169 for five. Ian Gore 62, Glenroy Weekes 56; M Morton two for 37. Anguilla 157 for eight. Lennox Carty 72; Purnell Joseph two for 17, Ian Gore two for 27, Pat Spencer two for 35.

Antigua Masters beat Anguilla by 20 runs in the semi-finals. Scores: Antigua Masters 131 for five. Aldrick “Tread” Meade 25, Glenroy Weekes 20; N Hamilton two for 25. Anguilla 110 all out. Derrick Mitchell 24; Ian Gore two for 13, Clarence “Belly” Fredericks two for 15, Pat Spencer two for 21.

Antigua Masters then crushed St Croix by 99 runs in the final. Antigua Masters 187 for five. Derrick “Darby” Benta 57 not out, Ian Gore 55; Michael Bicette two for 21, Clifford “Bumbo” Walwyn two for 32 runs.

St Croix 88 for nine in 14.4 overs. Keith Elliott 27, Clifford Walwyn 20; Pat Spencer four for 17, Clarence Fredericks two for 24, Ian Gore two for 26.

Benta was named Player of the Final while Gore claimed the Most Valuable Player of the tournament award. He scored a total of 205 runs and captured six wickets for 82 runs.

Pat Spencer took the award for the most wickets with a total 15 scalps, while fellow Antiguan Kirthley Maginley copped the prize for the best wicketkeeper.
