St. John’s Antigua- A 19-member squad has been named to represent Antigua & Barbuda in Group Two of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-17 Youth World Cup Qualifiers slated for Jamaica from July 11 to 15.
The tem comprises Akelo Andre, Avier Christian, Adrian Constant, Kyll Ireland, Daiquan Martin, Shavorn Philip and Akoe Aska all of Villa FC.
Six players from the Future Kings team including Peter Jacob, Diquani Francis, Shakeem Gomes and Gioele Marzi have also been selected, with Jevon Francis being the lone player from Ottos Rangers FC.
Remario Roberts and Jarmarlie Stevens both of Empire FC will also make the trip with Kayan London of Urlings, Andre Martin of SAP and Javorn Stevens of Greenbay Hoppers rounding out the selections.
The team is slated to leave Antigua on Friday for St Maarten where they will play a series of warm-up matches during a one-week camp before leaving for Jamaica on July 11.
Head coach Rolston “Debu” Williams believes the camp will serve to better prepare the players ahead of the opening round of the competition.
“The team came in a good while practicing one day a week or two days a week and we have done a lot of work and I think that we have improved the team tremendously in terms of their knowledge of the game and technically, all aspects of the game,” he said.
“There are some areas that I think may be a little weak that we think we should have done a lot more work with much earlier in terms of the goalkeepers and stuff like that but so be it. We are to the final end now and we have to go forward in a positive way.
The coach added: “The matches in St Maarten, I believe, are going to be the first test of the team’s strength and its weaknesses so that we can do a better evaluation going forward.”
The former Parham player turned coach said that he’s hoping for good performances from the team both in St Maarten and in Jamaica.
The rest of the coaching staff are Lenny Hewlett as assistant coach, Daryl Michael as manager, Urvin Lewis as goalkeeper coach, William Richards as trainer/physiotherapist and Jerome Corbett as equipment manager.
Antigua & Barbuda will face opposition from hosts Jamaica and Bermuda in the three-team group. Antigua & Barbuda tackle Bermuda on July 13 before facing off against Jamaica on July 15.
