Scottish couple Hugh and Jane Campbell have been recognised by this year’s Carnival Development Committee for their dedication to the festival for more than 20 years. Not only were they invited to lead the opening parade last Saturday, they have also been declared honorary citizens of Antigua & Barbuda and are slated to appear on a float on Carnival Monday.
The Campbells first experienced Carnival in the summer of 1993, and have been hooked ever since. Their exuberant dancing efforts were first recognised in 1999 by none other than Road March King Oungku Edwards, who awarded them a plaque which is currently displayed in the living room of their Edinburgh home.
Hugh said of the recognition, “We were thrilled. We were honoured. We were privileged,” and of his experiences on Wadadli in general: “The people are just wonderful; so friendly and so open to everyone.” The couple seem ideal ambassadors for this year’s theme – “Carnival uniting people.”

Honorary citizens of Antigua and Barbuda. Is this similar to the milennium citizenship?Hope they know that they have to be here every year or they might just take it back ha ha.
@ Mary that’s just a dumb statement. Try and contribute something that makes sense. My 7 year old could hardly understand what you are trying to say.
Vibes are you sure that it is your 7 year old? If you are so bright, then you would have been able to take the ’sense’ out of the nonsense. I am sticking to my story.
Go Ele, go Shuggie! Comgratulations from your proud Scottish grand-daughters. If only our parents could keep up with your pace. Looking forward to having you soon home. Megan, Zoe, Imogen, Lucy, Sophie and Aurora. xxx
