Beauty. Brains. Brawn. Talent. Those are a few of the words that conjure up tonight’s competition between 11 delegates from the Caribbean who are vying for the Jaycees Caribbean Queen title this year. But you’d have to add words like statuesque, graceful, congenial, … and then you get the real picture.
The contestants are Sangrena Harris of Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda’s Dorri Benjamin; Miss Barbados – Sakina Alleyne; Miss Dominica -Marcia Baptiste; Tamara Martina Dickens of Jamaica; Sherelyne Dyer who will be representing Montserrat; Marcellina Aretha Ventura who is Miss St Croix; Miss St Kitts & Nevis – Sudeakka Francis; Miss St Lucia, Iva Satney; Miss St Vincent & the Grenadines, Aphesia Matthews and Miss Trinidad & Tobago, Cherrese De Abreau.
For the second year in a row, Guyana has opted out of the pageant after having named Kisswana Jefford as its representative.
The delegates were treated to a welcome cocktail Wednesday night after which they returned to their rigorous rehearsal schedule, which continues today until noon.
Six segments are to be incorporated in the three-hour show, which begins at 8 pm at Antigua Recreation Grounds, namely: introduction, interview, swimwear, parade of national (cultural) wear of each participating country, talent and eveningwear are all set to take centre stage tomorrow at the 49th production of the show.
Each delegate is required to integrate the “Save the Earth” theme into her presentation.
Stage Manager and Supporting Show Sub-Chairperson Maurice Agard said if he were to use one sentence to describe tonight’s show it would be, “It’ll be an exciting, dynamic night of great performances, full of energy and enthusiasm under the theme Tropical Fantasy – Embracing the effects of climate change.”
Two sideshow events to be included in the pageant are a duet by Ian Hughes and Senator Joanne Massiah and a performance from the National Dance Theatre.
A breakfast and prize-giving ceremony follows on Saturday morning at the City View Hotel.
Persons who want to be treated VIP (all inclusive) have to pay $100. It’ll cost $40 to sit in the Viv Richards stand, while $30 will allow patrons to sit right in front of the stage. Seating in the Andy Roberts Stand costs $25.
