Does the Calypso Monarch competition still deserve its pride of place, on Carnival Sunday, in the festival’s line-up?
yes yes yes yes
No it doesn’t. The songs aren’t riveting. Most of the calypsonians are obviously voices for hire and the shows, over the years, have been boring, boring, boring. Party Monarch is a better draw, especially the Groovy segment.
What kind of a question is this? Are any of the other shows better than the Calypso Monarch? If it doesn’t deserve its place then many other shows do not deserve their place either. Then let’s just do away with all the shows and let carnival be mas only!
Unfortunately I agree with Freidah. The reason for having it on the Sunday was that the second round would allow everyone to get in the mood to jump up. With everyone now singing serious songs both rounds, it now makes more sense to move the party monarch to that day. Let me also add that this year the quality of calypso’s have hit an all time low
Yes it does. ABC, I agree with you; and talk about boring the Soca Monarch is also boring this year in my opinion
I see the calypso assasins are at it again. While you are at it why don’t you just kill carnival too and put an end to culture.
Besides that I would go to calypso show on a Sunday night but would have reservations about going to a Soca show on my sabath
Calypso Monarch will always be the #1 show of Antigua Carnival once we appreciate culture and recognize social issues. My issue though, is the lack of professionalism displayed by some of the participants and members of the CDC. Just imagine! one week away from Carnival – at the Calypso monarch semi-finals- and one back-up-singer reading words of short choruses from a sheet of paper, for almost all of the artists. A simple paid for role like this? Come on! the calypsonians can’t rely on that. Not to mention the people who appoint these back-up singers…how much preparation was put into this. Not the only problem noticed, but it reflects the overall hitches noticed each and every Carnival season.
PS. still don’t know why more than half of the cost of the ticket for the Calyso monarch show is charged at semi-finals. And you are expecting a bigger turn-out at the pre-carnival events??? Wow!
Get it together CDC!
Who said that culture is only calypso? The whole festival needs to be under consideration to see what we want to do with it. What do we keep, what do we tweak, and what needs to be retired. If we keep saying this is how we’ve always done it, then we’ll keep getting what we’re getting now, which is poor participation, audience apathy, poor production from the participants, a committee who think they have a right to be there, and other festivals by passing us. This was not started as a celebration of culture. This was an economic engine; culture was secondary.
Ordinarily, I would say yes, Calypso deserves the placement, but t his year, the show is going to be so boring. Lawdy, even if De Bear falls off the stage, he will win. The picking so slim, they too want tonic
Sunday night is a rest-night from parting at party monarch show the saturday night, we need the lil rest we can for jouvert morning.Leave it alone
