Government in limbo

Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer

Attorneys representing the United Progressive Party are awaiting the arrival of Justice David Harris to hear a stay of execution in the election petition cases which invalidated the March 12, 2009 elections of Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, Dr Jacqui Quinn-Leandro and John Maginley.

The decision handed down by Justice Louise Blenman leaves the reins of power in a precarious state, with the Antigua Labour Party controlling seven seats and the United Progressive Party having seven, with a pledge of allegiance from Trevor Walker of the Barbuda People’s Movement.

Walker’s seat was the only one Justice Blenman declared valid of the four under review.

While one of the attorneys representing the UPP’s interests, Leon Chaku Symister, says the country is on the brink of a constitutional crisis, Harold Lovell, MP for City East and an attorney-at-law, says nothing has changed.

In fact, in response to an OBSERVER query, Spencer declared, “I’m still the prime minister.”

In days to come, the Electoral Commission will come under serious fire, with Justice Blenman saying, there is no doubt that the blame is vested in “the lack of competence of the electoral officers.”

This judgment is a joke, she ruled that the margin of victory makes no difference and that one seat in Barbuda where there was some undue influence that that seat should remain. Am sure on appeal a three member panel would overturn this farce.

It would be a dark day if these vagabonds are allowed to regain power. I for one will die in self imposed exile as I will never return to the land of my birth under these despots of the ALP

This exactly why I have no faith in Caribbean courts and the privy council in England will forever remain our final court of appeal. Am not surprised that this jurist from Guyana has made this decision, like her fellow countrymen they all want a government that they can continue to flock into Antigua.

Please knock yourself out, we don’t need you nor do we want you! Anonymous it’s foolish comments like yours that make descent Antiguans and Barbudans hold their heads down in shame and have to wonder how some of us are so ignorant and retard and always too willing to advertise it to the world.

Have Mercy or whoever the hell you are, I know that all you and your cult followers want is to have your corrupt leaders back in charge. if thats what the majority wants that’s their business, it’s a good thing I have two passports and will never show the Antiguan one again. I may be pulled out of the line for just simply having it as they use to do to Antiguans prior to 2004.

I do hope that this judgement will open the eyes and minds of our Government. You are given another chance to re connect with the people. You are also given a short time to do so, leadership is what is expected of you. You must make the decisions that are needed. History has been made in Antigua today because you did make the right decision when you were first elected. A sad day in Antigua and Barbuda.

You have a slim chance unless you do not re connect with the population.

Its amazing that even after an independent ruling, the singers still have not changed tune. I have a feeling that even if God were to come out of heaven and rule against their party they would tell him he is wrong. Keep following the bad logic of the former UPP chairman and see how far that gets us. The UPP needs to quickly have bi election, stalling this will only make things worse not only for the UPP but Antigua. Why are you singers so afraid of the polls?

  17. Eric says:

I am still waiting to read the judgments – but what I heard the judge ruled that the late starting at the polls was the reason to negate the results of the three constituencies – how can that be possible – the “Representation of the People Act” state that election shall be held between the hours of 6 AM and 6 PM – this means exactly what it said – between the hours of 6 AM and 6PM – anytime between those hours.
What this ruling is saying is that, if an election is one second late in starting – that the results are void. Crazy
On further review – the sensible question is how would any one side benefit from a late start? The late start did not apply to one party as against the other – the ruling is wrong

This is the day I’m ashamed to be an Antiguan!!!!!!!When I was living in the Virgin Island i was asked a question, and i was so ashamed i made lite of it.the question was (is it only the Bird family could run Antigua are they the only educators in your country) this was asked because it does seams as if only the Birds are always in power, and look at what they did to Mr Walters, what goes around comes around Mr Spencer should have had ALP’S put in jail for using the people of Antigua money and bringing all Jamaican and Guyanese rejects in our country, People of Antigua change is good i pray Mr B Spencer continues to lead our country.

all I can say is this: ALP were very crooked but atleast they hade somewhat of a clue what they were doing, UPP is so incompetent and crooked.
maybe its time to change politics completely, reform with socialism and u might get something for your tax money compared to now, when they end up in some ministers pocket

so temnan its ok for u and the ALP cult members to sing? I see well it serves the UPP right they have not learnt from history. all the ALP did was pull out the same playbook they used on the PLM use ZDK night and day spread lies and inuendoes while they fail to fight fire with fire and lock up the leaders decapitate them like they did PLM ”those who don’t learn from history is bound to repeat the mistakes of the past”

We must be extremely vigilant and forward thinking, in order to protect and sure up these sectors of our Political systems, and move towards procedures that are constantly monitored, secured, self verifying, and fault detecting.

Remember “Man/Politicians” by nature, will do all in his power to gain a competitive political advantage in order to place them at that ultimate “Victory” spot.

Please let us as Caribbean People rise to the level where, the systems that determines our elected officials are so tested and sanitized, that once an election is completed we can be assured that this fully represents the will of the People.

  27. Jodi J says:

If the UPP (the government for now) has nothing to fear then they would just accept decision made by the learned judge Blenman. It would rather be fitting to hold bi-elections, or fresh general elections, and let the people speak. In my opinion getting a ‘stay’ indicates some FEAR! Look at what Manning is doing in Trinidad. A few accusations, and what he has decided to silence the voices in opposition, is have elections and let the people decide. After all the final decision should be made by the people. Why must we keep the country in any limbo? Resolve the matter already. The stay and any idea for appeal of the judgment, in my opinion is ridiculous.

If they have to hold on to power thru legal manuvers then so be it. the ALP has used legal manuvers to keep their leaders out of jail, all u outsiders need to keep out of our business. I know that most of you will be hoping to go to the pools on the tainted list but no way will that happen.

Cool Ruler i am glad that you have declared your hand (ie that you are a UPP singer). Anyway man keep singing, for some reason today I am enjoying hearing the blues. Finally the world gets to look in on you Antigua. It was only a matter of time. Mr. Spencer, it is not the size of the office that matters but what you do with the space. You squander the good will given to you by the people of Antigua, now you pay the price. Now you’ll get a taste of what Allen Stanford is feeling now all those who took from him with a smile have turned their backs on him. I will be listening out for news reports on how much weight you are expected to lose etc.
    What a day!

  38. Zackie says:

Antigua Bill, are you serious? Did you state there is hope with ALP?? Let me paint a real scenario. ALP wins the elections; first thing court cases get quashed. Rappaport paid his IHI money back into our treasury, the others keep theirs. Gaston gets back the prime land that was taken from him but this time for free. ZDK stop paying for electricity once again as they did for over 20 years. APC gets to control all of the power supplied to Antiguans, more money to you know who. SVC zooms in because they now have the govt that made whatever deals and borrow whatever money from Stanford. Social programs for poor people gone, they said so. Taxes gone, I doubt this even though they said so,. No money to pay many of the ALP people you see jumping up. Bring in another most likely crooked investor, more woes for Antigua down the road. Social security raided again. So too Medical Benefits, State Insurance and APUA. Radio Observer and other closed down. ALP could never operate under a scrutinizing media. Communication monopoly again. Scandals of all sorts again. I could go on and bear in mind all these things actually happened under ALP and they have not changed one bit. Pray tell Antigua Bill where do you see hope in all of this?
