Police are probing the circumstances under which 65-year-old Levingstone Roberts fell to his death in his Gray’s Hill backyard.

Roberts’ wife, Pauline Roberts, told The Daily OBSERVER that he died apparently from falling off a ladder, which he had leaned against the back of their house. She said she had heard something “like a thud” before she found him sprawled on the ground. Her investigation, however, had been delayed while she gave herself insulin.

“I know that he was behind there cleaning down the house (but) because I had the (needle) in my knee … I could not get up at the same time,” she told this newspaper. “So, after taking out the needle, I got up, realised that around there was very silent.

“So, I came out… and when I went around there, I saw him lying on his back,” Mrs Roberts said.

She noted that her husband had always been working around the yard, persisting even after it had gotten dark and despite her protests.

“I was so frightened…. I saw him lying there,” she recounted. “I said, ‘wait wha’ happen to Mr Roberts? Mr Roberts dead?” she asked herself. At the sight of ants crawling over her husband’s face, she said she then called the emergency number 911.

The woman said her husband had no known illness, but added that he had a chronic pain in his right knee.

Word of the death, which Mrs Roberts estimated had occurred at about 12:15 pm, had gotten around to at least a few people. At the time of The Daily OBSERVER’s visit, the scene was sedate and few were present.

Along with Mrs Roberts, the remaining occupants of their house, situated near the government reservoir atop Gray’s Hill, are the couple’s three children aged 20, 17, and 13 years.
