BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – A 10-member trade mission from Canada is due here on Monday for a weeklong visit intended to improve trade relations with Barbados and Caribbean businesses.
The mission, organised by Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Nova Scotia Business Inc and EduNova, consists of companies with expertise in the areas of information technology, education, health, and building and construction.
“The goal of this trade mission is to renew and strengthen the historic trade and business relationship between Nova Scotia and the Caribbean” says Jacques H. Desjardins, Counsellor Commercial and Senior Trade Commissioner at the Canadian High Commission in Barbados.
“At a time of the initiation of the Canada-CARICOM trade negotiations, this trade mission reinforces both the interest and commitment Canadian businesses have in this region,” he added.
Several members of the trade delegation will also be visiting St Lucia, Grenada and Jamaica.
Earlier this week, both Canada and CARICOM trade officials said they are committed to negotiating a “beneficial trade agreement” with both regions.
The new trade pact is expected to replace the more than 20-year-old Caribbean-Canada Trade Agreement (CARIBCAN) that was based on preferences to the Caribbean and which has since been ruled out of sync with World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules.
