The Government should simply offer them cheer leading support. They just need a good lawyer. I believe this is an issue that can be resolved via our legal system.
at 8:24 am
I believe that these people should get their money, i mean some of it is their personal money that they save. The government should do what ever it takes to assist them in getting their money. even if it means that they have to hire a lawyer and in the end gets a 5% percent charge. Help in anyway possible. We are all ANTIGUANS
at 8:57 am
The Government should assist these citizens in any way it can. Some of the money is the employees own savings and Stanford has sufficient assets in Antigua to pay the severance. After all, Stanford is obligated to pay severance to discharged workers under the law. There is no need for any tax-payer money to be involved.
at 5:44 am
The government should do absolutely nothing! The government is already being sued by Stanford investors for BILLIONS in losses and, oh look…boo hoo hoo the former employees want compensation too…stand in line!
Any action to help these former employee’s will be seen as further evidence of proof of involvement and will provide justification for the victims to be compensated for their losses.
Looks like Spencer thought he had GI Joe in his back pocket, what you say now?
at 12:41 am
I know some people get upset when they hear the name Stanford, but these people are our own Antiguan brothers and sisters who have been wronged by their former employer who did not obey the labour laws of our sovereign nation. I expect our government to enforce the laws of the land.
at 4:14 pm
Government should help not only them, but all the persons who were owed money when the Stanford Group collapsed. All these people should come together so that the full impact can be seen, and then Government should pay them and deduct from funds owed for properties compulsorily aquired.
at 4:43 pm
I am wondering if this is not a Trade Union matter. I thought that Trade Unions usually go to bat for workers who find themselves at a disadvantage terminated unfairly or when a company suddenly goes under. Ooops! I just remember, the workers at SDC did not want to have anything to do with Unions at that time because their pay was ‘up there’ and their jobs were ’safe’, so maybe now they can pay up some Union Dues and try get a Union to fight their cause. I don’t think this is a matter for Government, in any case.
at 6:52 am
THANK YOU ‘Wonderer’. My sentiments exactly.
at 9:11 am
These emplyees were part of a criminal Organisation and should get nothing.
at 11:53 am
I am surprised by the comments against the former employees’ situation and suppose this is the Antiguan badmindness I have heard about, but never experienced.
Then again, if they were in the same shoes they would sing a different song.
Crabs in a barrel, so sad.

WE DESERVE HELP & WE WILL GET HELP CAUSE WITH GOD ALL THING ARE POSSIBLE!
God says in the Bible : All in Authority Must & Will Have to Answer to For Any Wrongs You Have Done My Children. I sincerely pray for the person above who can sit by and just talk “garbage” for lack of a better word. We are all Antiguans, The Americans will fight us tooth an nail for all that we claim to have taken back! Are we gonna sit back “as a government” (because as far as i was taught the Govt is the people) which is you and I and wait till that day. The Govt has every right to assist us they are to be servants of and for the people! Its a pity i cant FIRE them! Are we so ignorant to help! Wasnt RAS the highest paying tax provider in this land? Can RAS come now and move al these lovely building and landscape that we are letting slip into the shadows? We were all wronged, IF IF he is found guilty! BUT He was a wonderful provider and lover of Antigua, He had his ways but he did Antigua & Antiguans Great! We cant even get a fair priced ticket to a Caribbean Island Now! He provided that for us even if he could not keep up! They say who is in the fire feels the heat.
I pray that YOU ALL will never experience such an injustice in your life or your family’s life!
Back Hunter: You are part of a sinful world should God automatically put you in Hell without a chance to repent?
Wonderer: We chose not to have a Union and that is ourright as much as Your right is to choose a Union…..Are we not a Free & Fair Country? Are you saying we have not the same rights just because we made a choice. It is a small world people and one that begins to get smaller & smaller. Be wary. It is a small world people and one that begins to get smaller & smaller. Be wary!
To My Ex-Stanford Mates: Have No Fear! Keep Praying For Justice! Trust In the Lord & Lean Not to Your Own or Others Selfish Mis-understandings! God is In the Midst of All This! Everything on this earth has an expiry date! This too shall Pass!!
AS MY DEAR GRANDMA USED TO SAY (GOD BLESS HER DEPARTED SOUL):
WHEN U NA KNOW U JUST NA KNOW!!!

IT IS BETTER TO CLOSE YOUR MOUTH AND BE CONSIDERED A FOOL THAN TO OPEN IT AND CONFIRM THE FACT!!

@ Forgive Them Father
Am an Antiguan, and not because you are an Antiguan guarantee my automatic solidarity due to this fiasco with what happened to the Stanford employees.
You made a decision not to be unionised and this is the consequence of that choice. I co-sign with Wonderer, this a labour relations matter that involves the Trade Union, not the government.
A word of advise to Forgive Them Father, if you are seeking my support, I suggest you do it in a civilize manner, not by attacking those who disagree.
at 10:05 am
The issue of unionized labour is a red herring as many businesses in Antigua are non-union. This does not give any employer the right to break the law on severence payments to discharged employees.
Labour laws were put in place by the government of the people, and the government should enforce all laws of the nation.
at 6:50 pm
Well I guess the “View” must be the Government it self!
I repeat my self “View” It is a small small world!
I wonder how it is I am attacking someone by my comments yet no one is attacking “US”. To accuse “US” of being a part of a criminal organisation as if we knew more???
I’ve said it and just like other comments have sparked things i expected mines to do just that!
God Bless!
at 11:15 pm
Thank You “buzzbomb” bring level headedness to the issue, the real issue!
at 11:17 pm
Let me make myself clear, I did not say that all employees should be Unionized; I said that this is a Trade Union matter. Note, also, that I was in no way advocating that the employees should not be given what is theirs; what I AN saying, is that this is not an issue for the Government. There are laws in place to deal with these matters, have persons forgotten that we still have an Industrial Court. I could be wrong, but I think these “hurting employees” could take their case to the Industrial Court and get lawyers to represent them since they are not Union members. We tend to call on Government to meddle in everything and when they do, we turn around and say they “Playing Politics”. We need to get away from the days of “Check your minister” and step into the days of “I am going to talk to my Attorney”.
at 8:56 am
Which is exactly what is being done “Wonderer” Talking to a Lawyer yet the point is should the Government intervene somehow? I think so because this thing is gonna get even bigger than this when the Americans get there way.
Why is it we are not saying anything When the Government intervened, went to Parliment and took back the lands, which were paid in full by RAS (whether for little or nothing) and they the Government have not paid for the said lands they are trying to hold (i should say). Maybe (notice i said maybe) is the Government owing the Stanford Employees severeance too cause usually it is the assests that one must look on to repay these employees is it not?
at 10:40 am
If Antigua were a real country, they would incarcerate every employee of this criminal enterprise.
Of course, since criminal enterprise is the second biggest source of income in Antigua after tourism, We all know that will never happen.
at 5:27 am
It is sad to hear that people are so heartless toward the stanford employees. As I have read only few very few knew that his enterprise was running a sham. And while ignorance of the law is no excuse, they individuals were not doing anything illegal, so why should they be made to pay…. It is out of jealousy because they made more money, had better homes etc…. so now there is no compassion. My dear children you never know to what situation you will find yourselves and be in need of a little compassion from they very people you are willing to fry or kick under a bus. What you all fail to realize that the plight of these individuals affects us all. When they are unable to pay their mortgages, car notes, college tuitions etc, it is our economy that suffers. Contrary to what we are being told, the world financial meltdown is not the main reason for our economic plight… Stanford was the second largest employer, second only to the government, and he was the largest paying taxpayer and now all that money is gone, not enough coming in.
Do we kick our brothers and sisters when they are down, we like to claim in Antigua that we are a christian society, we like to believe we are so religious but the word of God reminds us that … if anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue (fingers in this case) but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God , the Father is this, to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world… James 1vs 26.
Can we not see our sisters and brothers who worked for mr stanford like orphans who have been deprived of some protection afforded then such as severance? They are certainly orphans of the stanford storm that is far reaching and far affecting. Let’s help them out, support then in every which way we can… Some of us will give all we have to the church whose pastors live in mansions while they still in two by fours but are not willing to give that to the person in need just as Jesus commanded.
at 8:57 am
@Ghost of Robert Vasco.
You are an idiot of the highest order!!!
Did any of the employees have knowledge that Stanford was not above board?
I havent read anywhere that Madoff’s employees were jailed for being part of his fraud which by the way was 8 times greater than that of Stanford.
People like you are just the scum of the earth. The employees engaged in work that they believed was fair and just and as such are entitled to their severance according to the laws of the country.
You cannot fault people for working for a living.
at 9:54 am
Do you really think if there are i.e. children of a Bankrobber they should get a share of his pray because they did’nt know he robbs Banks.
You are such a Shame
at 12:31 pm
How can you liken the employees to chidlren of a bankrobber, that is so crazy. The part of that buisness that was illegal was how he got the investors to invest, HE USED his American based employees, not his Antiguan based employees. So for every shop keeper that unknownly sell too and accept monies from a bankrobber should have to give back the money?
at 1:20 pm
Because the Stanford Employees were not Unionized does not mean that they cannot get Representation from a Trade Union. All they need to do is join the Union and pay a years’ subscription.
Employees are entitled to their Severance so says the laws of the land. I think the government should assist in anyway possible. What about the payments that Stanford was getting monthly from the Government? Just a thought.
at 3:14 pm
What will they do with that man? – stanford.
at 10:33 am
To Sovereign above, yur last words said it all for you. That your stament is Political motivated. Why should they not get anything. Thats monies rightly owed to them. And stand in line they should not. Maybe ur bitterness stem from the fact that you no longer recieve crumbs from the former goverments table. Or you were denied a job at Stanford.
Who knows. You have been weighed and found wanting.
Please somebody help these people get what is rightfully theirs as soon as posible.
Here we have a U.S reciever raking in millions and they cant gwt anything.
If you dont have anything constructive to comment please keep of that blog.
at 11:46 am
ts: there were employees who warned big investors about 6 months before the crash. I.e Munoz. I know also the german Investors who redeemed then millions.
at 12:52 pm
Some of these people could see no wrong with stanford because their pockets were being well lined. Well the chickens have come home to roost so deal with it. People must always remember to be humble because they don’t know what tomorrow may bring.
at 2:19 pm
interesting:you are just jelous yu never got a job at stanford. You have no shame.
at 5:23 pm
This isse has nothing to do with workers not being unionised. The law of the land is clear that in such situations the employees severance is to be given top priority. That’s the law.
The Half Moon Bay workers were unioniesd and are still waiting to be paid since 1995. How effective have their union been in that matter? I guess the answer is self evident.
It would be nice for people to comment only on things they know about. The Government through the Prime Minister, the Attorney General and the former Finance Minisre had met with a group of Stanford employees and promised to do all in their power to resolve the situation. The Government subsequently went to Parliament to aquire Stanford assets. I would say this makes to Government directly involved with a huge responsibility to the former and current Stanford employees.
at 9:17 am
The Government got involved by appointing a “receiver”. GOOD. Now, is the government watching the “receiver”? The receivers located and received USD 1 BILLION last december. Why the staff has not been paid as yet? Who are watching the RECEIVERS??? WHO is responsable for review their books???? WHERE IS THE AG, he apointed them. What are they doing with the people’s money.
This is the same lack of professionalism in every ministry in Antigua and Barbuda! This is what happens to the people’s money. MY MONEY!!!! which goes to the minister’s pockets.
